Artisanal cooperage, a world of its own

Our World

Passed down from generation to generation, the artisanal expertise of Tonnellerie Remond has built its reputation. Refined over time, it is driven by the passion of men and women who practice their craft with exacting standards and humility, in the heart of an exceptional terroir.

Oak, a precious raw material

Barrel Crafting

Only oak, remarkable for its flexibility and robustness, is used to make barrels. The sessile oak, a slow-growing tree, is often preferred because it releases soft tannins and elegant aromas that blend harmoniously with wines.

Tonnellerie Remond exclusively selects trees from the most beautiful French forests, legendary forests such as Tronçais, Bertranges, Allier, and Vosges.

Carefully selected, these "grand crus" of nature, cultivated for over 150 years and selected for the quality of their grain, are split into staves before being stored in the cooperage’s drying yard.

For 18 to 36 months, they mature slowly in the open air. Wind, rain, and sun reduce their astringency, refine their structure, and develop their aromatic potential. This natural process, combined with responsible forest management, places Tonnellerie Remond in a logic of sustainability and circular economy.

"This craft is also about precision, a love for a job well done. (...) You have to know how to listen to the wood, understand it, to transform it into an exceptional object."

Thierry Grivot, Master Cooper at Remond.

The cooper’s gesture, between tradition and sensitivity

All the craftsmen at Tonnellerie Remond cultivate an intimate, sensory relationship with wood. Sight, touch, and smell are all engaged: the eye spots the slightest variation in the grain, the hand feels the smoothness and any roughness, and the nose captures the aromas released by toasting, allowing the duration and intensity to be modulated.

This in-depth knowledge of wood is forged over the years. It takes time to become an expert cooper. Most of the craftsmen at Remond have been working there for a long time. Some even practice this craft from father to son. Their unique expertise is expressed at every stage of shaping, with unmatched precision.

The different stages of mastered expertise

Expertise

Every gesture in the art of cooperage is executed with meticulous care.

After drying, the staves are carefully sorted and then shaped. Next come the stages of jointing and assembling the staves—this delicate assembly of about thirty pieces that gives birth to the conical shape of the barrel. Finally, toasting takes place. This crucial phase represents the true heart of the cooperage’s expertise.

Tonnellerie Remond has developed exclusive toasting profiles—MTL©, MTL-©, MTL+©—allowing for a custom aromatic signature, ranging from fruity notes to spicier or toasted aromas.

The cult of detail

Elegance and
Precision

At every stage of manufacturing, extreme attention is paid to quality. At the end of production, nineteen criteria are checked to ensure the perfect seal and regularity of the barrels.

Each one is unique, specially crafted for a winemaker, a wine, or a vintage: custom toasting, personalized engravings, specific hoops—everything contributes to making it an exceptional object.

"Every detail matters": it is this demand, rooted in the DNA of Tonnellerie Remond, that allows its clients to enhance their wines with elegance and precision.

Expert representatives and distributors

Distributors/Agents

In every region where the cooperage’s barrels are distributed, salespeople are both technicians and advisors: being trained in oenology and having knowledge of barrel-aged wines are necessary conditions to join the cooperage. They must also know how to repair barrels if needed.

Over time, close relationships based on expertise, trust, and proximity are built between the estates and the salespeople: bonds placed under the sign of co-construction and sharing.

Furthermore, Tonnellerie Remond only works with distributors rooted in their territory, recognized for their knowledge of wine, and themselves trained in the unique expertise of the cooperage.
