Tradition and Modernity – Evolving Craftsmanship Without Betraying It

For over 70 years, Tonnellerie Remond has walked a fine line where heritage and innovation meet. It is a demanding path, yet one that defines our identity, and it can be summed up in a single principle: innovate without betraying craftsmanship. This motto embodies the soul of our House and propels it into the future.
Tradition et modernité

In our workshops, some gestures remain unchanged. They form the backbone of our trade, our very essence. The selection of French oak from sustainably managed forests, natural drying, hand assembly, and wood-fired toasting: these are the unchanging fundamentals, validated by human sensitivity. No machine, no matter how precise, can replace the eye, touch, or intuition of an experienced master cooper. These gestures cannot be modernized or automated. Instead, they are passed down to perpetuate the craft.

Yet Tonnellerie Remond is not frozen in the past. It evolves, adapts, and refines its methods to meet the expectations of a new generation of winemakers seeking precision and bespoke solutions. Modern technologies have found their place in the workshop, helping humans go further. Machining staves to ±0.1 mm, laser measurements, and internal quality controls: industrial precision serves artisanal excellence; never the other way around.

This modernity is also expressed through the House’s ability to invent new solutions. In 2018, faced with an exceptionally hot vintage, Tonnellerie Remond developed an unprecedented light toast, MTL-, to preserve the freshness of a powerful wine. “That day, we proved a cooper could be a strategic ally, not just a supplier.” Innovation also stems from constant dialogue with winemakers, from listening and gaining a deep understanding of terroir and vintage.

Bespoke craftsmanship has transformed the cooper’s role: expanded wood selections, custom assemblies, unique barrel shapes, and a broader range of toast levels. The relationship with wine estates has become a meticulous co-creation, where every detail matters and listening is the first advisor.

Tomorrow, Tonnellerie Remond will face major challenges: climate change, dwindling wood resources, and growing demand for neutral aromatic barrels. But the opportunities are just as significant. From extreme personalization and eco-friendly technologies to new markets in spirits and natural wines, Tonnellerie Remond moves forward with one conviction: the future belongs to those who know how to evolve without denying their heritage.
