In the Workshop: The Birth of a Barrel

The birth of a barrel follows the slow, organic rhythm of wood: 150 years of growth in the forests of France, 2 to 3 years of natural drying, then the priceless time of artisanal craftsmanship—sorting, staving, toasting, shaping, hooping, sanding, and finishing. Each step extends the last, passing on the essence: the soul of the wood. This ancestral process makes Remond’s coopers the keepers of stories. A glimpse behind the scenes of the workshop.

From Staves to Barrels: 12 Key Steps, with Excellence as the Only Standard
When the staves cross the threshold of the workshop, they already carry a century and a half of light, rain, and wind. They have been split and slowly air-dried. Here, they are about to transform. The cooper’s first act—sorting the staves—is an act of reading: grain, color, veining, density, origin, age. Their senses are instruments of high precision. "A good cooper feels the wood as a winemaker feels their wine."

Hollowed and joined, the stave becomes a barrel stave. hollowing gives it shape and place within the circle; jointing adjusts the edges to within a tenth of a millimeter. Nothing is left to chance. The staves are raised into a barrel shape, held by temporary hoops. Preheating softens the wood, allowing it to bend without breaking. At the precise "click" of the final fit, the cooper knows the barrel’s seal and balance are assured.

The barrel exists, but it has no identity yet. That is born with Remond Cooperage’s signature toasting—MTL and its variants—the aromatic hallmark of the house. From fresh fruit to grilled notes, the toasting palette offers a vast organoleptic range. Only the eye, nose, and experience of the coopers can gauge the fire’s intensity and translate it into precise aromas.

Next come shaping, final hooping, sanding to erase imperfections, and finishing, which embeds the Remond logo into the wood’s fiber. Each barrel is then inspected, tested, and fine-tuned to the winemaker’s expectations. Six of the twelve key steps can be customized on request: wood selection and origin, toasting intensity, barrel shape and size, hoop type, and branding. A goldsmith’s bespoke craftsmanship.

A Craft of Art and Patience
To step into Remond’s workshop is to understand a profession where humans are in constant dialogue with wood and fire. Four hours of focused work per barrel, years of drying, 150 years of growth: a Remond barrel is born of mastery and patience. With 12,000 to 20,000 barrels produced annually, destined for the world’s most demanding estates, Remond Cooperage silently accompanies thousands of wine stories.
